Matt Thompson has been named Director of Transportation for McCracken County Public Schools (MCPS).

Thompson, who had been the department’s interim director since December 1, 2023, has been named to the position permanently. He replaced John Tucker who is the new maintenance supervisor for the district.

As the Director of Transportation, Thompson manages a wide range of responsibilities critical to the smooth functioning of transportation. The department is responsible for monitoring the bus routing system, coordinating and staffing bus routes throughout the district, and maintaining the bus fleet. Their goal is the safety of student's daily commute to and from school.

For the last 11 years, Thompson has been the assistant principal at Lone Oak Middle School (LOMS). He joined MCPS in 2010 and was an assistant principal at Hendron-Lone Oak Elementary before transferring to LOMS. Before MCPS, Thompson worked as a teacher in the Livingston County School District, Marshall County School District, and the Paducah Independent School District, respectively.

“I am humbled by the trust that the McCracken County School District has always given me.  The education profession is about service.  The students in our schools are our community's future, and the transportation department will do its best to serve them and their families.  I am excited to be a part of the continuous progress made in the McCracken County School District,” said Thompson.

Thompson has maintained a CDL with the ability to drive a bus since beginning his career in education 26 years ago. He received his bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and Rank 1 from Murray State University.
