Reidland Elementary School Awarded 21st Century After School Program Grant
Reidland Elementary School has been awarded a five-year 21st Century After School Program Grant totaling $490,000. This grant is a Title IV-B program funded by a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Education and administered by the Kentucky Department of Education.
This program provides academic support for students to meet state and local standards in core subjects, as well as offering enrichment opportunities. The program must take place during non-school hours to complement regular academic programs, literacy, and other educational services to families.
Reidland Elementary is eager and excited to re-establish the program for the upcoming 2024-25 school year. Olivia Hackney will serve as the Program Coordinator. Reidland Elementary School’s Principal, Anne Cox, said,” The staff at Reidland Elementary are excited about this opportunity to academically help students beyond the normal school day! Even though this program will look slightly different from our last 21st program, we know it will greatly benefit our students.”
McCracken County Schools currently has eight other schools that have funding for 21st Century after-school programs: McCracken County High School, Heath Elementary School, Heath Middle School, Hendron Lone Oak Elementary School, Lone Oak Elementary School, Lone Oak Middle School, Reidland Intermediate School, and Reidland Middle School.

On Friday, May 3rd, over 100 Reidland Intermediate School 5th-grade students received certificates for completing the DARE program. The curriculum was taught by Campus Police SRO Jon Wentworth over ten weeks, and the topics included responding to bullying, dealing with peer pressure, and making responsible choices. The classes held group discussions about real-life experiences and examples of being a responsible student. The students were also tasked with completing a final essay which mentioned useful information learned during the DARE program, how they have already utilized the DARE decision-making process, and how they plan to use what they have learned to make safe and responsible decisions in the future.
Three students (Claire Van Meter, Ella McDowell, and Ruby Bergman) were selected as essay winners and shared their work at the completion ceremony. A special thanks to RIS 5th grade teachers for supporting students during the essay process, and also to MCPS Food Services for providing a tasty and well-deserved afternoon snack for all of the DARE students in attendance.
