On Thursday night, the McCracken County Lady Mustangs traveled across town to face the St. Mary Lady Vikings in the second matchup between the two teams in the regular season. The Lady Mustangs went in with a purpose and swept St. Mary in two sets with a 25-3, 25-9 finish.

“It was a good district win for the girls,” McCracken County head coach Chancie Coleman said. “The girls were able to get some work in on the court ahead of a busy weekend.”

In the first set, McCracken County went on an 18-point run with sophomore Caroline Presswood serving. The Lady Mustangs pushed ahead to 18-1 before a return landed out of bounds, allowing St. Mary to gain control. Unfortunately, the Lady Vikings could not find a rhythm within the first set, as McCracken County’s defense remained stoic while volleying back and forth until the dam broke, allowing the Lady Mustangs to return to serving, which resulted in a 19-3 result on the scoreboard. The first set continued as McCracken County went on a six-point run to clinch the win.

The second set had a little more tension as the Lady Vikings worked to find minuscule flaws in McCracken County’s defense. The Mustangs took a 2-0 lead before St. Mary was on the scoreboard. A cat-and-mouse routine played out between the two as McCracken County took a 4-2 lead, with the Vikings fighting back, inching closer until the team’s defense began to fall.

The set continued as McCracken County took a 10-5 lead, going on to a five-point lead before St. Mary gained a point back. However, the Lady Mustangs pushed ahead immensely while the Lady Vikings could not reach double-digit scoring. The Mustangs sealed the two-set match with a 25-9 finish.

UP NEXT: The McCracken County Lady Mustangs will head to Greenwood (TN) over the weekend ahead of the program’s matchup against Paducah Tilghman on September 24. St. Mary will meet Community Christian Academy on Saturday at Hickman County in the First Region All “A” Classic.
