In the first round of action at the Second District basketball tournament, the McCracken County Lady Mustangs took down of the Community Christian Academy Lady Warriors, defeating them by a score of 82-6. With this win, McCracken continues their streak of never missing district championship, moving on to their 12th straight appearance.
The first two minutes of the game looked closer than the final score implied. Emma Reed nailed two shots for the Lady Warriors, one being a shot three feet behind the three point line. This had CCA trailing just 8-5 early in the contest.
Unfortunately for the Lady Warriors, this was all they could muster for the entirety of the next two quarters. McCracken’s defense proved to be overwhelming, and was complimented by an impressive offensive showing.
It was a barrage of threes from the Lady Mustangs that was a key difference in extending their lead. McCracken totaled 10 threes throughout the match, with Skater Houser providing an impressive role off the bench with five threes of her own. Head Coach Scott Sivills had high praise for a multitude of girls following the win.
“Skater House really stepped up. Ashley Word could shoot the three as well; at the end, Layton Owens. She’s going to be a bright spot in our program in the future,” Sivills said. “We’re excited about the future of this program, but tonight we took care of business, and can focus on Thursday night.”
Since those first two baskets by Reed, McCracken County went on an astounding 74-0 run. This essentially closed out the game, until Cecily Ford tho a three at the final buzzer to add a few more for CCA.
Skater Houser led McCracken on the score sheet with 17 thanks to her five threes. Ava Hughes was the only other Lady Mustang to eclipse double digits with 10. Those two were apart of 13 different scorers of McCracken, with all but one player finding the bottom of the net.
The Lady Mustangs will now move on to the Second District Championship, where they will face the winner of St. Mary and Paducah Tilghman, who play tonight. The championship match will take place at St. Mary High School, tipping off at 6 p.m.
