For more than 80 years, The Paducah Sun has named the top boys and girls basketball players across the First Region thanks to votes from coaches and local media members. While there are 15 teams on both sides and dozens of athletes to choose from, only 10 are named to each Paducah Sun All-Purchase Team.
With the First Region tournament under wraps and the Girls Sweet 16 starting Wednesday, there’s no better time to honor those Top 10 female student-athletes for their accomplishments on the court. The team consists of 10 individuals including a Player of the Year.
The youngest girl to make the All-Purchase team this season is bound to be on team for years to come. McCracken County’s Ava Hughes is just a freshman and making big waves in the region with 484 points and an average of 15.1ppg this season.
She has a steady hand with the shot, averaging 50.4% from the floor for 154 total buckets made while also grabbing 99 rebounds as one of the shorter athletes on the floor.
Bringing the ball down the court, Hughes is the leader for the Lady Mustangs and is projected to be so for the foreseeable future.
